Some 80 per cent of Kenya Tea Development Agency factory directors have retained their seats following the latest elections.

The chairman of Gathuthi factory, Mr Wallace Wachanga, and another director, Mr Crispus Ruitha, retained their seats after Tuesday's elections, as did Kiru's Chege Kirundi, Gatunguru's Wilfred Gachuna and Githambo's James Mambo.

The vice-chairman of Iriaini, Mr Michael Nderitu, recaptured his seat, while at Chinga, Mr Francis Mwangi and Mr Kariuki King'ori replaced two former directors. At Gitugi factory, former chairman Munene Kahiro lost the seat to Mr James Waithitu, while Mr Thirikwa Giteru retained his seat.

Small scale farmers across the country were for the first time electing a third of their directors under the system based on the proportion of one's shares.

Most factories in Mount Kenya region adopted the new system, while some rejected it in favour of the old one that gives all shareholders equal voting rights.

KTDA region two manager Mr Alfred Njagi said elections of directors took place in eight out of nine factories in the larger Murang'a and Nyeri districts.

The elections aborted in Ragati, Kimunye, Kangaita, Makomboki and Kagwe tea factories after the shareholders refused to use the new system.

These included some electoral areas in Ngere, Gacharage, Mungania, Kathangariri, Thumaita and Ikumbi.

However, most growers in Meru generally adopted the new system and elected their directors using it.

About 2,000 tea farmers who turned up for election of two directors of Ragati in Nyeri North said the new system based on bonus shares awarded on the basis of a farmer's production had not been endorsed by an annual general meeting.

A shareholder, Mr Kega Kang'au, said the new rules had not been presented to any meeting as stipulated.

Chaos reigned as the angry farmers tried to eject the presiding officer, Mr Leonard Nduati, and his team from the venue, claiming he was planning to endorse the election of certain candidates.
