The Senate has promised to cooperate with telecoms operators in the country to tackle the problem of multiple taxation and other key issues necessary for the smooth operation of the industry.
Chairman, Senate Commit-tee on Communications, Chief Sylvester Anyanwu disclosed this while reacting to a presentation by Globacom at its corporate headquarters in Lagos.
Globacom had, while receiving the Senate Commit-tee on Communications, made a presentation on its operations, milestones and challenges, noting among others, the problem of multiple taxation as one of the major impediments to tariff reduction.
Mr Mohamed Jameel, Chief Operating Officer, Globacom, had listed some of the problems confronting operators to include erratic power supply, vandalisation of existing infrastructure, security and lengthy processes at all levels of government. He also outlined problems occurring from backbone outage when the optic fibre cable is cut by third party contractors as well as the problem of multiplicity of taxes from the various tiers of government.

He told the visiting lawmakers that each tier of government requires separate, costly and cumbersome approval process for right of way (ROW) for the laying of optic fibre cables nationwide. This, he said, has slowed down the pace of work on key projects designed to ease communication traffic in the country.
Senator Anyanwu however, promised that the National Assembly would be willing to partner with the operators to look at the challenges and where necessary, fashion out legislation that will nip the problems in the bud.
The Committee members also inspected Globacom's facilities in and around Victoria Island, Lagos.
