The increasing number of accidents has led to the high demand for blood, a health official has said. Ambrose Magombe, a laboratory assistant with the Nakasero Blood Bank, said about 138,000 units of blood were consumed annually.

Magombe called upon the public to donate blood to save lives. "Donating blood doesn't only save people's lives but it is also good for the health of the donor," he said during the national blood donation drive at the Constitution Square on Tuesday.

The theme of the event is: "You and I in partnership to serve the most vulnerable". It was organised by the Uganda Red Cross Society as part of its activities to celebrate the establishment of the International Red Cross Society.

The society expects to collect 5,000 units of blood during the campaign across the country.

The director of the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services, Dr. Peter Kataaha, warned against hospitals selling blood to patients, saying it was illegal. "Selling blood is unacceptable, because it was donated free of charge."

Pastor Robert Siwemuke of Living Bible Ministry in Mukono has donated blood over 20 times.

He said this was one of the ways he was reaching out to the needy.
