MEAT consumers should demand better quality and hygienic meat, the agriculture ministry has advised.

"If we reject unhygienic meat, it will not be supplied. This will help us avoid diseases like bronchitis and tuberculosis," said Dr. Benon Kyokwijuka, the assistant commissioner for veterinary public health.

Kyokwijuka said although the meat industry had a high health and economic potential, it could be a hazard if handled carelessly.

"Meat production is done under unsatisfactory hygienic and environmental conditions. The slaughter houses and butcheries lack refrigerators and have poor waste management systems.

"Since the launch of the meat hygiene improvement campaign in May 2006, various meat businesses have been inspected and the proprietors asked to improve the quality and safety of the meat and its products," Kyokwijuka told journalists at Kampala City Council headquarters on Monday.

"The proprietors should observe laws governing the meat industry. The joint inspection team will start an enforcement exercise targeting those who do not comply.

"The public should report sub-standard meat handling on 0772429371, 0772586710 or 0772447761," Kyokwijuka added.

In July 2007, the council threatened to close seven abattoirs for failure to meet the standards.

In September, the slaughter houses in Nakasero, Nsooba Kishita and Wankulukuku defied the ministry's directive to close despite being sub-standard.
