Uganda: Woman Held Over Child Theft

Kampala — A Woman  suspected to have faked a pregnancy has been arrested over child theft.  Annet Kafuko, 21, a resident of Nakosi in Nakisunga sub-county, Mukono district, allegedly stole a two-month-old baby on February 8.

Kafuko told the Police that she got a miscarriage while she was six-months pregnant but her husband, Mutoto Yiga, insisted that he wanted his baby and threatened to divorce her.

To save her marriage, Kafuko visited her friend at Kikooza in Mukono town council whom she asked to get for her a baby. Justine Nanyonga was the caretaker of the baby. She narrated that on the fateful day, Kafuko offered to carry the child as they were going to the petrol station. "I did not resist because she was my long-time friend. On our way, we found an unidentified man who told us that the baby's mother wanted to breast feed it. Kafuko gave him the child and he disappeared."

According to Nanyonga, Kafuko, who was not pregnant at that time, also disappeared. "Whenever people contacted Kafuko on her mobile phone, she used to say that she had delivered a baby." Owacha Kazi, the crime chief, said Kafuko was last week arrested from Namasuba Kikajjo Zone.
