The East African Community has called for proposals for the study of the establishment of an early warning system to monitor food security in the region.

The community said on its website www.eac.int invited consultants to carry out the work including a comprehensive study on the subject.

"The study is to come up with practical recommendations and a project proposal on the establishment of an East African Early Warning System," the website said. Bidders are advised to present their proposals along with the proposed data sheet, general and special conditions of contract, proposals and contract form and the terms of reference.

Bid validity should be three months from the submission date and the sealed bids should include a non-refundable $200 fee in a cheque drawn to the East African Community Secretariat and addressed to the secretary, tender committee, East African Community.

Food prices that have been rising world-wide have not spared East Africa and there have been angry reactions to leaders, who recently said the high prices are good for the food producers.

Much as the problem is a global one, central bankers world over argue that it can not be solved using the usual monetary policies.
