Super Eagles of Nigeria, in the new FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking released yesterday, remain Africa's 5th team and 39th in the world. Super Eagles failure to improve their world ranking after crashing from the its exalted position as Africa's best team in February, following their woeful performance at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, may not be unconnected to their inability to play any international competition for the past three months.
In a largely unchanged ranking, released by the world soccer governing body on Wednesday, Ghana still retains Africa's top spot, a position they have held since February, sequel to their impressive campaign at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations held on their home soil. Cameroon finished 16th in the world and occupies Africa's second position with Cote d'Ivoire and African champions, Egypt coming 3rd and 4th in the continent, and finishing 22nd and 30th in the world respectively. Mali, Morocco, Senegal, Angola and South Africa complete Africa's top 10.
Meanwhile, with just 20 international matches accounting for the new monthly ranking released, Argentina stay ahead of fierce rival, Brazil, but with only two points separating the two as against the 10 points in last month's ranking. World champions, Italy, Spain and Germany rounded up the world's top five.
Other countries in the world top 10 include Czech Republic, France, Greece, Portugal and Netherland.
