The Senate Committee on Communication has singled out Globacom for commendation over its quality of service.

Chairman of the upper legislative arm's committee on communication, Chief Sylvester Anyanwu, who gave the commendation during the committee's fact-finding visit to the national operator last week, said even the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has rated Globacom above its competitors in the quality of services being provided for Nigerian subscribers.

"From the report we got from the Nigerian Communications Commission, it is only Globacom that has not been sanctioned for poor quality of service," he noted.

The chairman had expressed the concern of the National Assembly on the quality of service offered by telecom operators and noted that the committee has been very hard on the operators in recent time because of the issue. He urged Globacom to strive to improve further on its quality of service, adding that the expectation of the entire nation from the company on quality service delivery is very high because of its provenance as a wholly indigenous telecoms brand.

The lawmaker also commended Globacom for its unparalleled rural penetration strategy in the communications industry.

Chief Anyanwu said since majority of Nigerians live in the rural areas, it is perilous for any telecom operator to ignore them. He commended the forthright disposition of Globacom to provide services in the rural areas in addition to the urban areas, adding that over 95 per cent of those that will keep your business going are in the rural areas.

He was also full of praises for the company for the huge investment in the Glo-1 submarine optic fibre cable which is nearing completion and remarked that the completion of the project will be a significant boost to the operations of Globacom and other operators both within Nigeria and in the West African sub-region. Glo 1, described as the single largest private investment in telecoms in Africa runs from Lagos and Bonny in Nigeria, across 15 West African countries through Portugal to Bude in the UK. It also has a dedicated transmission line to New York in the US.

In his remarks, the Chief Operating Officer of Globacom, Mr Mohamed Jameel, told the visiting lawmakers that Globacom has been proactively working towards increasing its network switching capacity to 35 million so as to eliminate the problem of network congestion as the network continues to grow.

He disclosed that Globacom plans to add 1,700 new base stations and 54 new switch centres this year alone to make the network cope with projected growth and also guide against network congestion.

He said that Globacom has always been very careful in its business dealing with its subscribers, adding that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has adjudged the company's subscriber billing platform as accurate.

He also told the Senators that local languages would soon be introduced to enable millions of Nigerians interact with the Glo Customer Care in their mother tongue for quick resolution of problems and enquiries. Globacom is also expanding its customer care operations with the addition of over 400 new Customer Care seats, which will generate about 1,800 new jobs.
