Ndola — A LUSAKA magistrate's court has issued a bench warrant against a Lusaka teacher who is charged with impersonating a medical doctor and allegedly administering fake HIV/AIDS drugs to unsuspecting Lusaka residents at a fee of K5 million.
The accused person was allegedly injecting HIV/AIDS patients with a mixture of amino acids claiming that he was injecting them with tetrasil.
Richard Mwanza, 29, a teacher, is charged with three counts of impersonating a medical practitioner contrary to section 30 (c) of the Medical and Allied Professions Act Cap 297 of the Laws of Zambia.
Magistrate Aridah Chulu issued a bench warrant against Banda for not attending court cases since he took his plea.
The bench warrant was supposed to be returned yesterday but had been extended to June 4.
In the first count, Banda between February 10 and 24 unlawfully did impersonate a medical practitioner purporting to be registered by the Medical Council of Zambia and gave medical advise and treatment to Nyambe Mubiana of Lusaka's Emmasdale Township.
In the second count, Banda is charged with practising as a registered practitioner when not contrary, to section 38 (a) of the Medical and Allied Professions Act Cap 297 of the laws of Zambia.
Banda in the third count is facing a charge of unlawfully using the title 'medical doctor' and offered medical services to Mr Mubiana in February and charged him more than K5 million after injecting him with a fake tetrasil injection.
The accused is also charged with using an unregistered room for consultancy contrary to section 44 (1) of the Medical and Allied Professions Act, Cap 297 of the laws of Zambia.
He is alleged to have unlawfully provided medical services in a room that is unregistered as a consultancy room and gave medical advise and treatment to HIV/AIDS patients.
Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority (PRA) prosecutor, Brian Kabika informed the court that he was in the process of preparing fresh summons for the sureties so that they could also appear in court on June 4 this year when the bench warrant would be returned.
