Students from Kwali area council in the Federal Capital Territory, studying in various unity and tertiary institutions in the country have expressed displeasure over the decision of the council to abandon the scholarship scheme hitherto enjoyed by its indigenes.

In a chat with our correspondent, the students pointed out that the scholarship scheme which was re-introduced by the late council chairman, Hon. Samuel M. Gwamna, was a source of relief and encouragement to their academic pursuit, but regretted that following the gruesome murder of the erstwhile chairman early this year, the project has been abandoned.

Most of the students, who spoke to our correspondent, stated that the late chairman was the only person in the country who disbursed scholarship to students during his first and second tenures.

"It is quite unfortunate the way evil doers murdered our council chairman who had so much vision for the council, especially in the area of education. Within his short period of time in office, he was able to bring transformation in education at the council by equipping our primary schools and ensuring that teachers took their jobs seriously. Sometime in November last year, he disbursed scholarship to over 414 of us in both unity and tertiary institutions as the first phase of the scholarship scheme.

He promised to carry out the second and third phases before the end of the year. It is quite unfortunate we were only opportuned to enjoy the scholarship for only two months because of evil men", said Ibrahim Musa who is currently a student of Abuja university.

Another student, Amina Mohammed, expressed doubt that the scholarship would continue if another chairman took over the council.

"I remember vividly the late chairman assuring us that he would sustain the scholarship as long as he remained in office. But evil men did not allow him to stay long in office, meaning the scholarship is also gone. I doubt if anyone taking over from him will want to continue with the project".

The students, however, called on the police to ensure that those responsible for the demise of Hon. Gwamna were brought to book.
