The Minister for Aviation, Gloria Akuffo, has said US$ 1.9 million has been disbursed as part payments to1, 024 staff of the defunct Ghana Airways Company Limited following the official liquidation of the airline.

"Government has so far released $2 million with US$ 4.5 million outstanding, 1,199 general staff including cabin crew qualify for severance payments at the cost of US$ 6.5 million which is being borne by government", she said.

She said, "20 out of the remaining 175 workers have rejected payment offer since they are demanding the calculation of their severance be based on their salaries at the out stations."

Speaking at her maiden press briefing in Accra, Miss Akuffo said "the airline is currently under liquidation which is being administrated by the Registrar General through Price Waterhouse Coopers as adviser that the liquidation process is substantially completed."

The sector minister said the mandate of her ministry among other things was to make Ghana an aviation hub and gateway to the West African sub-region by the year 2015.

She said three state of art fire tenders have been procured to deal with the emergencies and rescue operations expected to improve safety and security at the Kotoka International Airport.

The minister mentioned inadequate infrastructure, funding, inadequate staff management and technical skills as some of the major challenges of the ministry.

Miss Akuffo said lack of title to airport lands, encroachment on airport lands, high fuel prices, inadequate fuel storage facilities at the airports, high air fares and inadequate supply of utilities are affecting the smooth operation of the airline industry
