Calm and cooler weather aided firefighters on Monday trying to gain ground against a wildfire that burned the inside parts the Merkato branch of Awash Bank and a nearby cafeteria, including a paints store adjacent to the mini café.

The Daily Monitor's calls to Addis Ababa Fire Brigade were not immediately returned. But according to eyewitnesses, the cause was a fluctuation from the main electric power supply. Parts of the capital city has recently put under a ration owing to of electric power being in short supply in the country.

Almost all the facilities and properties of the bank at the branch office were destroyed by the fire. Isamael Abaecha, owner of the nearby cafeteria, said nothing was left of his Cafeteria. He said water applied to control the blaze also damaged his paint and paper store near the café. The owner estimated the damage on his property to be more than 5mil birr.

The cafeteria was open whereas the bank was not in service when the fire broke out. Police were busy at the scene preventing entrance for investigation and information was not immediately available about the cause of the accident including the damage in property. Neither were bank officials who visited the site willing to speak on the matter.

In related news, fire broke in the same day in one of the shops at Arat killo area but was put under control before it caused any damage.
