It appears that "Operation Thunder Storm" recently launched by the Liberia National Police (LNP) in collaboration with its international partner to combat armed robbery is making some impact as latest police report shows that nine cases of armed robbery were reported within three weeks.

Addressing jounalists Wednesday at the LNP Headquarters on Capitol Hill in Monrovia, Police Director Beatrice Munah Sieh said the nine cases of armed robbery were reported from April 14 to May 5 2008.

Few Weeks ago, the Police boss told reporters that 47 cases of armed robbery were reported throughout Liberia with Monrovia accounting for 40 from the beginning of April up to the time "Operation Thunder Storm" was launched mid last month.

In a relaxed mood, Col. Sieh attributed what she terms "reduction in armed robbery" to the support being provided the LNP and its partners by the public during the period under review.

"Police Community Forum which has been established in every community in and around Monrovia has greatly contributed to the reduction in the crime," Col Sieh noted.

However, she acknowledged that "the reduction of armed robbery" does not mean the crime has been eradicated as such, but urged the public to continue supporting the police as it endeavors to minimize the crime, or eradicate it.

The LNP boss said of the nine armed robbery cases reported, four have been forwarded to court for prosecution, while five were still pending investigation.

Col. Sieh assured the public that the police would do everything in its power to provide maximum security at all time.

Meanwhile, the Police Director has called on residents of Monrovia and its surroundings to desist from forming vigilante groups in their communities.

She said the police will not condone any community forming vigilante group in the name of protecting itself, adding "it is not your job to protect yourselves, but the police, therefore, do not form any group of such."

Col. Sieh admonished the people of Liberia to support the Police Community Forum rather than supporting vigilante groups which, she added, "are not different from armed robbers."

Commenting on other crimes that were reported during the period under review, Col Sieh said 10 cases of rape, nine burgluary cases, eight cases of aggravated assuslt, two cases of auto theft and three cases of power theft were reported.

According to her, some of these cases have been forwarded to the court, while others were still pending investigation.
