Boane
The general secretary of Mozambique's ruling Frelimo Party, Filipe Paunde, on Thursday warned residents of Boane district, 30 kilometres west of Maputo, not to be taken in by the "lies" against Frelimo that they will hear in the run-up to the provincial and general elections of next year.
Speaking in the administrative post of Matola-Rio, as he continues a tour of Maputo province, Paunde said that "many agitators, opportunists and liars" would appear as the elections approached, all denouncing Frelimo and its government, in an attempt to win votes.
Some would promise to raise wages and drop prices, even though high prices of fuel and food are dictated by the international market, he said. They would try to blame drought and the consequences of climate change on Frelimo.
Paunde argued that Mozambique is lucky, in that it possesses vast tracts of fertile land, many rivers and a hard working people. It was only through increased production that food crises could be faced, he urged.
"Each of us must cultivate our fields", he declared. "We must produce in order to reduce imports. We must produce for our own consumption and then export any surplus".

He urged Boane residents to farm in humid, low-lying areas, and to concentrate on drought-resistant crops, in order to combat hunger and emerge from poverty.
Members of Paunde's audience complained of a shortage of clean drinking water in the district. They said that the piped water system is not working properly for lack of pressure, forcing them to harvest rain water to drink, and even to rely on water from local swamps. Several local wells, they added, only provide fresh water for some months of the year - for the rest of the year. Sea water intrudes and the water is salty.
However, the Boane district administrator assured the rally that a project is under way to place six large tanks of water to guarantee supplies to people in those parts of the district facing the most critical water shortages.
