The principal of the troubled Koelel High School in Gilgil has been demoted three months after a student died at the school.

A source in the Ministry of Education said the teacher was transferred following the death of Master Bernard Makau on February 3.

"The Ministry had to act and the only way of getting trust from parents was by changing school management," said the source. Mr Karimi Njoroge, the school's principal including eight teachers, have been transferred from the school, with reports that others could leave.

Naivasha District Education Officer Mr Samson Wainaina confirmed the changes.

"It is true there are some changes in the school but I cannot give further details as I am in a meeting," he told The Standard.

Soon after the incident, a fourth form student was arraigned at a Nakuru court charged with murder of the 16-year-old colleague.
