The controversial military operations in Mt Elgon found its way in Parliament with the area MP seeking a ministerial statement on the matter.

Mr Fred Kapondi lamented that the operation was 'turning into a nightmare for the community' as the security agents comb the area for the Sabaot Land Defence Force militia.

Kapondi asked the Ministry of Defence to declare how many people have since died.

Civil society and other leaders have criticised the operations after victims of torture spoke openly about their ordeal. The Government has denied the claims.

Kapondi appealed for clarification from Government on the number of victims and the magnitude of damage to infrastructure and homes.

Journalists have been barred from covering the operations.

Defence Assistant minister, Mr Yusuf Hajji, said: "Mr Speaker Sir, I think the issue falls under the Internal Security docket, we are only assisting."

House Speaker, Mr Kenneth Marende, concurred and asked the relevant ministry to respond.

Internal Security Assistant minister, Mr Orwa Ojode promised to respond next Wednesday.

Ikolomani MP Mr Bonny Khalwale rose on a point of order seeking to know how the military left their barracks to harass residents.
