AFTER weeks of watching tortured souls trying to sing themselves to fame in seven different countries, the real thing is finally here. Last Sunday on M-Net, we watched the first batch of six of the Top 24 perform on stage as the Idols East Africa reality show kicked off in high gear. And boy, were there surprises.

We also got to see our own Richard Kawesa on screen as the alternate judge, the advisor, so to speak. Only now we are wondering what he is doing there.

Zimbabwe's Meeghan was first up with Piece of My Heart by Janis Joplin, then all the judges were all over another Zimbabwean who lives in Botswana, Ammara, who did Anastacia's I'm Outta Love.

Zambia's Mukuni, who said earlier that he cried a lot, did justice to Counting Crow's Big Yellow Taxi, then Cynthia's (who is Kenyan, but lives in Uganda) voice cracked on Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by The Chirelles.

Priscilla from Kenya was almost not there with Allanah Mile's Black Velvet, and 19-year-old Samantha from Botswana wowed us with her rendition The Shoop Shoop song.

Back to Kawesa, what was he thinking? Seems he has developed a major case of the Simon Colwell syndrome. To him, Cynthia was last, and Ammarah first.

At the end, Cynthia from Kenya and Ammara from Zimbabwe (the country did not vote for her) were the last ones standing, and became the first to qualify for the Top Ten. What happened?

Maybe Cynthia's angel face and crestfallen expression when Kawesa told her she was last generated a whale of a sympathy vote from Africa.

And the judges? Scar seems to have lost his sting, and just repeats what the others are saying. Hey TK, what's with the 'check this out?'

Up this Sunday is Group 2, which includes the first of only two Ugandans, Faycal. By contrast, Zimbabwe has eight in the Top 24, Zambia has seven, Kenya has six and Botswana one.
