A TEAM of seven lifters is heading for South Africa for a final attempt to qualify for the Beijing Games.

Mariam Nalubanga and Mubarak Kivumbi, who have been training in Colorado Springs for the last six months, are on their way to the qualifiers May 12-16 at Strand, South Africa.

They will be joined by Ismail Katamba and Godfrey Baligeya, who had a two-week training stint in Egypt. No lifter has qualified yet.

"We have been able to raise funds through friends. We are still looking for more to facilitate a coach," said Uganda Weightlifting Federation's Augustine Kayongo.

Mike Ssebbaale, Deo Kalyango and Khalid Batuusa are the other lifters on the team which has been boosted by the local Olympic committee and Star Photo Studio.

Badminton ace Edwin Ekiring will only know this weekend if he has qualified for the Beijing Games.

Ekiring is ranked 98 in the world, but because Asians dominate the rankings, the international badminton body analyses the entrants and their nationalities before releasing a list of who, from outside the Orient, qualifies.

Ekiring is on the Olympic Solidarity programme.
