KYAMBOGO University will re-open on June 13 after the staff validation exercise is completed, state minister for higher education Gabriel Opio has said.

The university was closed on March 8 following a sit-down strike by the lecturers. They were protesting reduction of their salaries and unpaid additional fees the Government gave lecturers in public universities.

They had not received this money since July 2007. Students later rioted for not being taught and the council directed the university's closure.

The decision to re-open came after a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday which resolved to have the university opened immediately, Opio said.

"The staff who will not qualify to teach in Kyambogo will be sent back to the education ministry for redeployment. Those due for retirement will retire," Opio explained.

Letters of re-appointment of successful staff will be issued from May 15 to 23.

Opio, who was accompanied by the acting vice-chancellor, Dr. Basiima Mpande, and the university publicist James Bulenzibuto, was addressing journalists at the Media Centre in Kampala, yesterday.

The council will also appoint the non-teaching staff after they are interviewed by the Public Service Commission in early June.

Meanwhile, the university will continue admitting undergraduates, beginning today, much as the institution is officially closed, Basiima said.

The academic registrar's office will be open to admit private students and register those on Government sponsorship.
