MPs will hold an informal meeting of the Speaker to deliberate over the progress of rural electrification.

Energy assistant minister Charles Keter informed the House of the Kamukunji as he said that the ministry's target was to supply all schools, churches and shopping centres with electricity by 2010.

Mr Keter also said that at least 20 per cent of all households in rural areas will have been connected to the power grid by the same year.

The assistant minister said that the electrification programme was progressing using funds drawn from France, Spain and the Government.

Categories

He said that under the programme, there were categories of connectivity in terms of individual and institutional consumers, with figures ranging from Sh5,000 to Sh32,000.

Mr Keter noted that the Ministry has written to all MPs, asking them to submit names of five projects from their constituencies which they want funded.

The matter came up as the assistant minister was replying to a question by Matungu MP David Were (ODM) who wanted to know when an electrification project in his constituency will be completed.

In reply, Mr Keter said that the project stalled due to the post-election violence which affected most parts of the country.

But he added that the project, which covers 17.5 kilometres and costs Sh3.2 billion, will be completed by September.
