Norah Akwi 21, was last week crowned Miss Uganda Eastern region at Mt. Elgon Hotel amidst a heavy downpour. A few drops cascading onto her well kempt hair; she didn't seem bothered - as she smiled for the photojournalists that were snapping away.

When she was asked how she felt, she said she was happy partly because she won but mostly because she is a Karimojong. "I feel good, but it is not just for me but for all the girls in Karamoja that never felt they could achieve anything.

I feel like the whole of Karamoja has won." In case she becomes Miss Uganda this year, much of her focus will be crusading against early marriages, a practice that is rampant in her region.

Winning didn't come as a surprise to Akwi as her mother Ms Mercy Imoko Nachuge was the winner of the Miss Tourism beauty pageant 1978-1979 and she said that the beauty and the winning was a family thing. "I knew she was going to win because I am her mother and I also was once a beauty queen.

I am very happy for her," the old woman remarked. Surprisingly however, all the 11 girls like Akwi, had one thing in common - they were bigger than the average beauty pageant contestant. They all had busty chests and curvy bottoms that provoked sexual remarks from the excited male fans.

And whereas they bore somewhat genuine smiles - save for Diana Kintu who kept smiling even when journalists had stopped asking questions - the girls here were not that articulate, they fumbled a lot with the questions. But this is not to say that the show was not well organised- it was.

Interestingly however, like it was in Fort Portal, the contest attracted a pair of twins, Carolyn Nyangoma and Jocelyn Nyakato, who unfortunately were not anywhere close to the winners giving way to Patricia Ayo and Diana Kintu as the runners up.

The show was wrapped up by Moses Radio and Weasel's performance, which was distracted by the rains. The beauty pageant is sponsored by Utl, Club beer and Air Uganda.
