Countries in the Sadc region will submit a joint proposal seeking funding for malaria interventions to the Global Fund to Fight HIV and Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria Round Eight.
In an interview this week, co-ordinator for the Trans-Zambezi Malaria Initiative Dr Kaka Madambo said the region would submit its application to the Global Fund on June 1.
"The move is meant to intensify regional interventions in eliminating the disease and mosquito breeding sites which cause malaria in the region," Dr Madambo said. He said the Trans-Zambezi project, which was mooted by Sadc Health Ministers, seeks to fill in gaps left by countries in eliminating the disease in the region. Although Dr Madambo could not give an estimation of the amount being sought for the project, he however said if approved, the money would procure boats instead of vehicles to reach to vulnerable communities.
"We are diverting from the use of vehicles to boats in order to reach distant communities. There are other areas which are not reachable by road but by boats," he said. Communities along the Zambezi River are exposed daily to life threatening malaria parasites but are often forgotten because of inaccessibility. In Zimbabwe, areas such as Msuna, Mlibizi, Simatelele and Chalala fishing camps are inaccessible by road. Dr Madambo said the proposal would be regional because one country cannot eliminate the problem of malaria alone and because mosquitoes have no boundaries. "This is in line with the theme for World Malaria Day: A disease Without Borders: United to Combat Malaria, Mosquitoes Know No Boundaries," he said.
Dr Madambo urged the national co-ordinating committees to co-operate in coming up with a comprehensive proposal. The deadline for applications to the Global Fund is July 1.
