Labour movement and its civil society allies yesterday undertook a protest march to the nation's seat of power in Abuja where it submitted a protest letter urging President Umar Musa Yar'Adua to back-up the on-going corruption probe by the National Assembly with a judicial commission of inquiry in order to assuage the feelings of Nigerians.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) which led other trade union bodies to execute the mass action, provided an insight into what it described as the scandalous and irresponsible manner by which the controversial $16bn power sector money was sqandered.

In a letter addressed to the President, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, NLC called for the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry to carry out a comprehensive inquisition into the corrupt practices, recover mismanaged or embezzled public funds and bring culprits to book.

The congress said the President needs to go beyond the administrative steps so far taken and the investigation by the National Assembly to institute a probe panel with judicial powers to ensure that all indicted in the public hearings are arraigned and prosecuted for economic crimes against their fatherland.

The letter which was read out by NLC President, Comrade Abduwaheed Ibrahim Omar amidst loud ovation by protesting workers in front the main building of the National Assembly urged Yar'Adua to consider it urgent to do something to check further plundering of the nation's resources, endemic poverty and instability plaguing the country.

The representative of the Senate President, Senator, Wilson Ake while recieving the letter unbehalf of the Senate, assured Nigerians that the lawmakers are ready to pursue the corruption probe to its logical conclusion.

"We your representatives are happy that you are solidly behind us. It is our resolve to pursue the probe without fear or favour untill we get to the root of the matter, "he said.

Former President of NLC, Comrade Adams Oshiohmole who accompanied the workers on the protest, described attempt by the daughter of the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to evade justice in her corruption allegation as a disservice to Nigeria.

He said the President and indeed any member of his family involved in any act of corrupt practices must as a matter of equity and justice be subjected to the dictakes of the law .
