Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has asked the Federal Government to check the indiscriminate importation of E-10 fuel grade ethanol into the country, by channeling its procurement via local ethanol manufacturers, instead of direct importation from Brazil.

President, MAN, Mr. Bashir Borodo, gave this advice during the 1st National Conference on Ethanol held in Abuja, demanding "the current tariff regime for rectified undernatured alcohol of 20 per cent and 5 per cent crude denatured ethyl alcohol be sustained to encourage local production".

He added "ethanol and blenders need to be encouraged and protected by government policies at all cost by removing all the impediments to growth so that in concert with other stakeholders, the most desired growth in the economy would be realised."

MAN president emphasised that all efforts be directed towards the production of ethanol and resolving issues of security, energy, infrastructure, poverty reduction and employment, noting that ethanol is emerging as an important motor fuel in view of the Kyoto Protocol Agreement (KPA) to which Nigeria is a signatory.

Meanwhile, the chairman of Ethanol Manufacturers and Blenders Assocaition, Mr. Dunni Oyegbile, observed that the group has directly and indirectly employed more than 200,000 Nigerians, in addition to generating tax worth over N2 billion annually for government.
