Quite humiliating for a sovereign country like ours is to see our nationals flock to diplomatic missions to seek help over domestic matters we can solve ourselves.
But this is exactly what happened this week.
Desperate former employees of the defunct East African Community did just that.
The retirees started by assembling at the State House gate in Dar es Salaam, as early as 7:30 am.
They wanted to meet President Jakaya Kikwete over the long drawn-out issue of their terminal benefits.
After failing to see the President, some opted to go to the British High Commission.
This is embarrassing, given the fact that the UK organisation that held the pension funds in those days, released the money to the Tanzania Government to pay its nationals' dues.
It is in the interest of the Government to ensure that the matter is resolved once and for all to get it out of this awkward position.
Most important, this will relieve the retirees of their suffering.
