Former Chronicle and New Ziana Midlands bureau chief Takesure Matarise has died. He was 49.

Matarise died at his home in Msasa Park, Harare, on Sunday and was buried at Warren Hills Cemetery on Wednesday. He succumbed to diabetes. The veteran journalist studied journalism at the Christian College of Sou-thern Africa.

He joined Moto magazine in Gweru before moving to Chronicle in Bulawayo where he became the paper's first bureau chief for Midlands based in Gweru in the mid-1980s before leaving to join national news agency New Ziana in 1987 and later moved to Masvingo as a bureau chief.

He was then transferred to Ziana headquarters in Harare where he was subsequently promoted to head its news section. Matarise left Ziana in 2002 and was at the time of his death freelancing for international news organisations.

A family spokesperson Mrs Judith Matarise described the death as a big loss to the family. "The family has been robbed of a pillar and beacon of hope. He was a very happy and understanding person." Zimbabwe Union of Journalists president Mat-thew Takaona described Matarise as "one of the most remarkable rural and developmental issues reporters to have emerged out of post-independence Zimbabwe."

He is survived by his wife Tamari and two children Grace (18) and Jabulani (13).
