Gombe State commissioner for agriculture, Mr. David Miyims Albashi, has commended the Federal Government's decision to downsize the number of contractors handling the procurement of fertilisers in the country, describing it as positive.
The arrangement, according to him, would enhance prompt supply, proper accountability, transparency in the process and quality control to the benefit of Nigerians especially the farmers.
The commissioner's commendation is against the backdrop of inadequacies in last year's supply that saw Gombe State receiving only 13, 000 metric tonnes of fertiliser out of the 22 metric tonnes approved to it by the Federal Government the previous year, believing that the poor quality of the products also contributed to poor harvests that year.
He pointed out that the state government, unlike last year when delivery was late and incomplete had already taken delivery of about 150 trucks of fertilisers amounting to 41 metric tonnes.
Albashi who bared his mind while commenting on the level of Gombe State's preparedness for this year's farming season said the state government expended a whopping 1.5 billion Naira on the procurement 12,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for onward distribution in this year's farming season.

The quantity in addition to the 29, 000 metric tonnes expected from the Federal Government meant a total of 41,000 metric tonnes of fertilisers would be distributed to farmers in Gombe State at a subsidized rate this farming season.
On the quality of commodity this time around, Albashi is confident that there would be no cause for alarm as lots of the necessary mechanism are now in place to checkmate the excesses of the contractors in terms of quality control.
While agreeing that the last year's method of distribution had a lot of flaws, the commissioner said the distribution mechanism had been strengthened and improved to ensure the commodity reached the targeted beneficiaries and early enough in this year's farming season.
