The director general of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili has debunked the allegation by critics that the agency intends to kill local industries in Nigeria.

Speaking to commerce and industry Correspondents in her office in Lagos, the NAFDAC boss said such criticism comes from fakers, adding that blackmail was part of the fight against fake food and drugs in the country.

She sited an example where NAFDAC has dropped its initial decision to ban the use of bottles by beverage companies following the knowledge that the production of bottle has 100 per cent local content that has generated employment for many Nigerians.

"We don't want to kill industries. It is all blackmail, and blackmail is part of the fight against fake drugs and food in Nigeria. When we got complaints from the public that foreign bodies appear in bottled drinks, we gave directive that beverage companies should be using plastic bottles. But when producers came and told us that bottle production has 100 per cent local content, we accepted it because we do not want to kill local industries because they generate employment for Nigerians. Rather, we asked them to install electronic siting machines and they are complying to this directive".
