Ahead of the Nigeria 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the River State Government wants the management of NFA, CAF and FIFA to consider ceding one of the sub-seats to the state, as all facilities and funds needed for the centre would be provided by the oil rich state.

Commissioner for Sports, Hon Boma Iyaye said Rivers State has the best sporting facilities in the country, apart from Abuja.

"The Liberation Stadium is undergoing major reconstruction and in the next six months, it would be ready for use by Dolphins who are currently playing their league matches and continental championship in Calabar. We are going to have all the seats covered, we already have Astro-Turf, the first ever in the country. Rivers people are interested in hosting the 2009 U-17 Youth Championship, which is why I am in NFA to dialogue with them to consider Port Harcourt as a centre. There is a stable government in River sate now, we want to be part of the show because we have the best facilities," she advocated.

Speaking on the security and hooliganism in River State, the commissioner of sports said government is already addressing the problem by way of creating employment and empowerment.

"Before the championship, the issue of insecurity will be gone. Although we are not part of the bidding process, we need a centre, FIFA should consider Port Harcourt."
