Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) have described as untrue media reports that a former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, was arrested by the EFCC.

In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, the party accused its detractors of being responsible for the wicked and unfounded story aimed at demoralising "its teeming supporters as they gear up for the re-run governorship election in Sokoto State ordered by the Court of Appeal.

The party said it was aware of the clandestine moves by some "disgruntled elements" who are dissatisfied by the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which disqualified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the April 14, 2007 governorship election in Sokoto State to create panic and confusion in the DPP camp.

"We are not surprised because we are aware they initially wanted a crisis that would culminate into the declaration of a state of emergency in Sokoto State when they attacked the convoy of our same presidential candidate last month but that was averted".

The DPP declared that Bafarawa is not its candidate for the re-run governorship election ordered by the Court of Appeal rather it is Muhammadu Maigari Dingyadi.

"We are therefore at a loss as to why some people are hell bent on dragging the good name of Bafarawa in the mud", it added.
