There is need for business to take up a new corporate citizenship to cultivate positive ties with the Government, which would aid in the recovery of the economy.
Top management can no longer afford to sit back and produce "look good" triple bottomline reports at the detriment of society. Commitment to good corporate citizenship is a fundamental part of achieving sustained value creation for both society and business.
But companies could only act as responsible and profitable citizens if they are healthy and striving organisations. It is in this regard that Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries president Mr Jokonya said, "owing to the liberalisation of the foreign currency market, the pricing structure to be followed should factor in the US dollar cost factor for business to remain viable and profitable."

Mr Jokonya said companies are supposed to be aware that it goes beyond viability of core business activities. "The contribution a company makes to society through its core business activities, its social investment and philanthropy programmes, and its engagement in public policy is determined by how well a company manages its economic, social and environmental impact, as well as its relationships with stakeholders Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Dr Gideon Gono last week said Government, employee representatives, and business should resume the stalled social contract talks, because this would be the only real way of arresting inflation and cushioning workers against the ever-rising cost of living.
Mr Jokonya said the challenges that companies must address to be successful in the long-term are intertwined with the challenges that broader society must address to improve the quality of life in communities. Human resources consultant Ms Tambudzai Nyika said for business to be good corporate citizens they should be able to treat employees fairly and equally.
She also said employers who pay their workers poorly were doing a disservice to the country.
