Harare

Highlanders finally left Harare yesterday morning for their tricky Confederations Cup second leg of the second round clash with El Merreikh of Sudan tomorrow evening.

The former champions left Bulawayo on Wednesday afternoon and stayed in Harare, before their departure yesterday morning, according to board secretary Jimmy Ncube. "We can confirm that they left at 11am today (yesterday) via Ethiopia and should arrive tomorrow (today)," Ncube said. The Bulawayo giants left without goalkeepers' trainer Peter Nkomo and assistant coach Gift Lunga (Snr) due to financial constraints. Board chairman Dumisani Sandi is head of the Highlanders team while ZIFA Southern Region secretary Stanley Ntenezi is head of delegation.

Dube, treasurer Odiel Nkomo and secretary general Horace Ndubiwa are travelling with the team, leaving no executive member manning the club. Committee member Siphatho Ncube stayed behind preparing for his examinations and chairman Ernest Sibanda is in the UK on private business. Highlanders have kept faith in their small squad for Africa and are taking 16 of the 17 registered players and are still missing midfielder Eric Mudzingwa, who is out through injury.

Highlanders trail last year's finalists in the same competition 0-2 after the first leg played in Harare, although the team's captain Gilbert Banda has remained confident that they can overcome the deficit. That duty rests on the team's senior players Banda, Cuthbert Malajila, Mkhuphali Masuku, Stephen Alimenda, Zephaniah and Johannes Ngodzo, Richard Choruma, Jacob Muzokomba and Washington Arubi.

There is no doubt that El Merreikh will look to finish off Highlanders early in the game, knowing that the Zimbabweans will attack from the onset, leaving them exposed.
