This year's Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races will be held at the Leaders Club on August 23, British Airways manager to Tanzania Saada Juma has confirmed.

The event has for the past seven years generated in excess of Sh200 million distributed to various needy communities in the country.

During previous edition, close to Sh50 million was collected and distributed to various beneficiaries and other community projects.

Juma said the organisers are now in search of the beneficiaries to gain out of the revenue proceeds of the August event.

Beside British Airways, other sponsors that have maintained unique stranglehold to back the event ever since its inaugural edition are Tanzania Breweries Limited, Holiday Inn Hotel and Mobile service provider Tigo that took over from defunct Mobitel firm.

Oryx, Safmarine and Tanzania Printers added to list of other sponsors for last years' edition.

Normally there are six races to be staged on the day with ten goats competing in each race.

Prize money for goat race winners ranges from Sh500,000 to Sh3 million depending on the sponsors' decision.

The event's sources of revenue are expected to be gaming, spectators' entry fees, sale of merchandise, auction, raffle draws and donations.
