THE Oshana Education Directorate is holding a three-day education conference to review the performance of schools under its jurisdiction.

The meeting which gathered all education stakeholders in the region was addressed by the Deputy Minister of Education, Becky Ndjoze-Ojo, who welcomed the initiative, saying there is a need to "re-look, review and evaluate" the education performance of the region.

"Proper planning, strong school management and leadership, effective supervision, monitoring, evaluation of teaching and learning and passion for excellence are some of the core values that need to be strengthened if we have to succeed in our work," Ndjoze-Ojo encouraged the participants.

The aim of the gathering was to share ideas and explore ways of improving the level of literacy and numeracy among young learners and to promote educational awareness among all parties in education.

Ndjoze-Ojo told the gathering that education would play a vital role if Namibia is to achieve Vision 2030 and NDP3.

NDP3, she emphasised, required "adequate supply of qualified, productive and competitive labour force".

According to her, the direct responsibility of knowledge and skills acquisition by students lay with the education sector, but this, she said, cannot effectively happen without the participation or helping hand of the private sector.

"I want to tell you that only through focus, visionary leadership can things happen the way we want them.

Let us be courageous, be determined and full of initiatives enough to ensure that we achieve our regional objectives that will eventually lead to the attainment of national objectives," Ndjoze-Ojo said.

In his address Governor of Oshana region Klemens Kashuupulwa said very often poor performance at many schools is attributed to poor management and the lax day-to-day administration of the affairs of schools, He said many schools that perform well are because of commitment and hard work of the school principals through team work and proper adherence to the rules without compromise.
