Local cyclists have started preparations for the 13th edition of the Ascension des Mille Collines (Ascension of a Thousand Hills) race.

The one-day event that will cover a total distance of 132km is scheduled for May 18 bringing together competitors from all local clubs.

The race will starts from Amahoro national stadium to Huye town in the Southern Province. The event is the second on the national calendar after season opener, Tour de Kigali, which took place in March. "The race is aimed at testing the standards of local cyclists every year," said Emmanuel Murenzi, Permanent Secretary of Rwanda Cycling Federation, Ferwacy. In this year's edition, winners will be classified in respect of their teams and not on an individual basis, Murenzi added. The number of participants who have registered so far is not big but organizers expect to have about 70 riders.

The registration is one until May 14. Ascension des Mille Collines will also act as build up for the upcoming Tour de Rwanda event in July. Tour de Rwanda is the most prestigious cycling event in the country and this year's will be organized to international standards, according to the Ferwacy officials.

Clubs expected to enter for event include Cine Elmay, Rwamagana, Rubavu, Huye, Unitave, Kayonza and Rapid Cycling Club. Meanwhile, the federation is still seeking for sponsorship and insurance for the event.
