FORMER Zimbabwe Test cricketer Mark Vermeulen has offered to help rebuild the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy in his latest bid to return to the Zimbabwe team.
Vermeulen was cleared of arson attacks by a Harare court in January after undergoing trial for burning down the Zimbabwe Cricket Academy pavilion and part of the Zimbabwe Cricket boardroom two years ago.
The court found he was suffering psychiatric problems which meant he had not been in control of his actions when he carried out the two attacks.
Through his lawyers Coghlan & Walsh, the talented opening batsman, who played the last of his eight Test matches in 2004, has told ZC that he will meet some of the costs of rebuilding the Academy through his payment from cricket if he is allowed to play. He could also set up a special fund.
He told IndependentSport: "I'm jobless at the moment, the only job I can do is playing cricket. I've kindly asked ZC to give me my job back, then I will give a percentage of my earning towards rebuilding of the Academy."
Vermeulen said he had also unsuccessfully tried to gain selection at first-class.

"I went down to Bulawayo to try to play for Matabeleland (now known as Westerns)," he said.
"I was told I had to get permission from someone at the offices in Harare."
He said he was now mentally and physically stable to play at the international level again following psychiatric rehabilitation.
