Liberia: MOA Official Highlights Importance of Food Production

Monrovia — Amidst the hike in the price of food and other commodities, the Director of Planning at the Ministry of Agriculture Ousuma Tall has underscored the need for government to make food production a major priority.

Mr. Tall observed that due to the fourteen years of civil crisis Liberia was vulnerable to food shortage, and as such, it is necessary that Liberians get fully engaged in food production.

The Agriculture Ministry official made the assertion when he spoke at a two-day Agriculture Coordinating Committee and Strategic planning workshop organized by the Ministry of Agriculture held at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville.

Mr. Tall reminded participants that Liberia needs assistance to boost its agriculture sectors, adding "we need your help."

He said the workshop is intended to coordinate agricultural activities of all Non-governmental Organizations operating in Liberia and to form a partnership.

Tall urged International Organizations operating in the country to engage in farming activities in order to help buttress government's efforts in her drive to alleviate poverty.

He said the government was doing everything possible to address the immediate shortage of food and middle term plan so as to avoid the shortage of food in the country "Government is putting in place mechanism to ensure that food is produced locally to feed our people," he said.

The Deputy Minister for Planning and Research, Mr. James B. Logan who spoke on behalf of Minister Dr. Chris Toe commended the International Organizations for their continuous support to the country's agriculture sectors and assured his entity would continue to partnership with them.

He appealed to donors and other organizations to help Liberia in its poverty reduction strategy program initiated.

The workshop brought together participants from the Catholic Relief Service, ADRA, Christian Children Fund (CCF), Africare, ICRC, GTZ, ZOA, Action Aid, IRC and World Vision among others.
