Monrovia — "The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRC) Remains more committed and prepared than even before to work for the recovery of our nation," LNRC President Theresa Leigh-Sherman told a news conference Thursday marking the 145th celebration of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day in Liberia.
Madam Leigh-Sherman noted that since the formation of the Red Cross Movement 145 years ago, it has maintained its position as a leader in the field of humanitarian intervention.
She said "Through its network of dedicated volunteers and staffs, the Red Cross has over the year provided assistance to needy people across the Globe regardless of race, religion, sex, nationality or political affiliation."
Leigh- Sherman noted that even up to this date, Red Cross continues to serve humanity in a number of areas including the provision of preventive and curative health care, disaster preparedness and response, and the practice and teaching of humanitarian values.
She said in collaboration with its partners from the Danish Red Cross, LNRC has launched the community based health and disaster management project in Bong and Nimba counties.
Madam Leigh-Sherman indicated that under the project which runs for three years, community dwellers are expected to benefit from the construction of 76 head pumps, 152 public toilets and the training and provision of toolkits to 26 traditional birth attendants.
"The project also incorporates other aspects such as HIV/AIDS awareness, and the spread of messages on the prevention of diseases such as Lassa Fever, Diarrhea, Malaria, etc," the LNRC President disclosed.
She noted that in January this year, LNRC recruited the fourth batch of 150 war-affected children for its child advocacy and rehabilitation (CAR) project.
