THE 2008/09 national budget will focus on employment and job creation, finance minister Dr. Ezra Suruma said yesterday at Parliament

The aim, he added, was to enhance economic growth and increase household incomes countrywide.

Suruma stated before the budget committee that additional resources would be allocated to key sectors which had the potential to create jobs.

The strategic interventions spelt out (in the budget) were expected to directly generate about 100,000 jobs, he explained.

According to the minister, Uganda would require about 16 million jobs for her working age population (16-64years) by 2010 and 28 million by 2025.

"The rapidly growing labour force at 6.5% per annum demands the creation of at least 600,000 jobs or more per annum."

Suruma was responding to issues raised by various ministries on the national budget framework for the 2008/09 financial year.

He, however, warned that the Government would not give more funds above what was allocated to each ministry due to a limited resource envelope.
