SHOWING too much respect on the field for the South African women's football side, cost Namibia´s Brave Gladiators a place in the final of the Cosafa Women Championships, says Jackey Gertze.

They lost 2-1 in the first of two semi-finals played in Luanda, Angola yesterday.

Gertze, who is the head of mission for the team, said the Namibians squandered at least four clear chances and showed too much respect for Banyana Banyana, who only managed to score their second goal in the second stanza.

The score was level at one all at the break.

We could have made it through to the final had it not been for some players who were too complacent to take on their opponents.

They showed too much respect and this was really discouraging,¨ she told The Namibian Sport.

She said they cried after the match because they realised they had all the chances to make it to the final.

It is a lesson for them as it is still a young team,¨ she said.

Namibia were runners-up in the final during the 2006 edition of the competition, when South Africa won it.

The other semi-final between Zimbabwe and Angola was played late yesterday.
