Uganda: Carnival of the Animals

column

The Carnival of the Animals is an ideal treat for the younger kids on holiday. Presented by the Kampala Ballet and Modern Dance School, the dance production promises the same excitement that made last year's The Nutcracker a theatrical box office hit.

The dance school has teamed up with Kampala Music School this time whose highly skilled musicians will score the dance production. A lavish cast of 180 children and adults comprising some of the ballet school's youngest performers and advanced level ballet dancers will execute this 19th century musical suite composed in 1886 by the French romantic composer Camille Saint-Sans.

The production is a favourite among many music teachers and young children. It is a playful progression of 14 movements, each depicting a different group of animals.

A master of ceremonies and a storyteller, guide the audience through a series of animal portraits, from marching lions and bouncing kangaroos to unhurried tortoises and a gliding swan. Artistically directed by Makerere University dance professor Jill Pribyl, The Carnival of the Animals promises to be a fun-filled interactive performance sure to entertain young and old.

The show is on at the Aga Khan Schools Main Hall in Old Kampala this Saturday at 2p.m. and Sunday at 2 & 4p.m. Charges are Shs15,000 for adults and Shs10,000 for the children.
