Uganda: Lecturers Split Over Evening Students

Makerere University lecturers have disagreed over a resolution passed last week by the Makerere University Staff Association (Muasa) general assembly regarding the teaching of evening students.

"The position reached at by some members of Muasa did not involve all the lecturers," said a lecturer from School of Education who preferred anonymity fearing that the matter could divide the lecturing community.

"We shall remain teaching but some people are using Muasa to fight Management." Another lecturer from Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics told Saturday Monitor that the main problem at Makerere University is lack of sufficient government funding which Muasa has turned to fight the current leadership led by Prof Livingstone Luboobi.

The lecturers, under their umbrella body - Muasa on Friday, April 2, at University's main hall unanimously resolved never to step in any evening programme class until the University management clears their teaching allowance arrears for 2007.

The University has about 1,300 lecturers as permanent employees while there is another lot who teach on contracts.
