INSPECTOR General of Police, Mike Okiro, alerted the nation yesterday that Al-Quaeda terrorists network plans to send time bombs to Nigeria and destroy the nation's economic and infrastructural concerns.

Consequently, he has directed the Assistant Inspector General of police in charge of Intelligence, Mr. Israel Ajao, the Commissioners of Police for Air Wing, Border Patrol and all state Police Commands to be at alert and ensure that these 'dangerous items' don't get into the country.

Okiro who spoke at Obudu Cattle Ranch at the opening of the IG's Conference with DIG's, AIG,s and States Police Commissioners also directed neigbouring states of Kano, like Kaduna, Bauchi, Jigawa and Katsina states to beef up security in their states to avoid a spill over of the riot that recently emanated over the alleged defaming of the Quran.

On the re-run elections taking place in Bayelsa and Sokoto states, Okiro directed CP's in both states to beef up security in order to ensure hitch-free gubernatorial elections saying "CP Kogi should do the same for the House of Assembly elections in that state".

He furthered ordered that henceforth, no correspondence from any of the Federal High Way patrol units nationwide should be addressed to him since they have been placed directly under the supervision of command commissioners of police since 2006.

Saturday Vanguard gathered that this directive followed discovery that Highway Patrol teams were hiding under the cloak of being under the IG to perpetrate severe criminal activities.

Furthermore, the IGP raised alarm on the disturbing upsurge in the use of army and police uniforms by criminal elements, adding that arrested suspects should be interrogate as to the source of the uniforms while marketers dealing in such uniforms are to be raided.

He directed that a public statement be issued by the FPRO and state commissioners of police on the illegality of the use of police uniforms by unauthorized persons.

While directing Command CPs to rescind their earlier decision to eject SSS personnel resident in police barracks as the issue of their stay had been amicably resolved, the IG said CPs should henceforth organize lectures for officers and men on safety precautions, and custody of riffle to prevent the ugly incident that happened at Ibadan recently.

He expressed happiness that the incident of accidental discharge had been reduced to the barest minimum and that the tempo should be maintained.

Advising all senior police officers to ensure that they go for medical check up, at least once a year, Okiro regretted that barely a week after the Kaduna CP, Haz Iwendi lost his life to stroke, an unnamed Commissioner of Police collapsed on his way from Calabar to the Obudu Resort and was rushed back to his state for medical treatment.

Another senior Police officer collapsed at the Lagos State police Command two days ago and this has shown the need for proper medical check up.
