Tenants who lost their property in the Tabata demolitions, and are not part of the evictees government recently compensated, are now demanding Sh5 million each.

About 97 tenants who rented some of the demolished houses are demanding a total of Sh485 million in compensation from the Government. They told reporters yesterday that by compensating their landlords only, the State showed disregard of tenants who were also affected by the demolitions.

The Government recently paid about 80 Tabata evictees Sh20 million each. The evictees have, however, threatened to file a lawsuit against the State to push for additional compensation. They have also vowed not to leave the site until they get full compensation for the damages incurred by the city council.

There was anxiety at the site yesterday after a local company, claiming to have been hired by the municipality, had threatened to forcibly remove the evictees from the site.

The tenants, most of whom had paid rents for as long as a year in advance, said they had not been refunded. A spokesman for the tenants, Mr Ibrahim Mwangubure told The Citizen that most of the affected tenants were finding it difficult to make ends meets after their properties were destroyed.

"We want government to intervene just as it did for our former landlords. Most people cannot afford to pay rent after paying in advance for the demolished houses. Our children are also not going to school as a result," he said. Ends.
