Tanzania: Open Tennis - Four Confirm Participation

10 May 2008

Four countries have confirmed fielding players for the third leg of the East and Central African open prize money circuit 2008 of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

The Confederation of African Tennis is organising the contest to be held at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club from May 29 to June 1.

Inger Njau, the captain of the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club lawn tennis section named participating countries as Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Burundi.

"We expect to get more entries from other member countries," she said, noting that Uganda and Eritrea have given strong hints of wishing to participate.

The event, sponsored by Vodacom Tanzania will feature more than 100 players eager to compete in the money-spinning event.

The first leg of the rotational event will be held in Ethiopia from May 15-28 and the second leg in Kenya from May 22 to 25, the captain noted.

"We expect players in the Kenyan event to feature as we prepare to host ours here in Dar es Salaam," she said.

It is not possible for Tanzanian players to compete in the Ethiopian event due to lack of funds, she said, noting that fielding players in the first leg was uncertain, "but we will probably do that for the Kenyan event."

Participants will compete in men's singles, men's doubles, ladies' singles, ladies' doubles, veteran singles and mixed doubles.

The would-be winner in the men's singles category will pocket USD 800 (about Sh900,000/-) while USD 600 (about Sh700,000/-) has been set aside for the ladies' single winner.
