Kenyan nurses will be paid Sh10,000 uniform allowance in two months' time.

This was revealed on Friday by the chairman of the National Nurses Association of Kenya, Mr Luke Kodambo, during the International Nurses' Day celebrations at the Aga Khan University Hospital.

He said the deal was reached after a successful meeting with the Medical Services minister, Prof Anyang' Nyong'o on May 8.

"The minister pledged to factor Sh10,000 as uniform allowance in June budget up from Sh3,000," he said.

The chairman also clarified that the payment of last year's allowance of Sh3,000 will be effected in this month's salary.

This was among the demands that made the Kenya Progressive Nurses' Association (KPNA) call for a nationwide strike.

Even though part of their demands have been met, KPNA insists the strike is still on.

"I don't see the reason why my colleagues would insist on a strike even after the meeting with the minister," said Mr Kodambo.

However, the chairman of KPNA James Muiruri said if all their demands were not met, they would still go on strike on June 16, as earlier planned.

Among the issues they are demanding for are a revised scheme of service where they can practise privately, a risk allowance of Sh20,000, increase in staff and housing and enough security within the hospital quarters.
