Nairobi — Over 2,000 swimmers are expected to participate in the Nairobi Amateur Swimming Association (Nasa) Masters championship, which gets under way on Saturday at Aga Khan High School.
Kenya Swimming Federation publicity officer, Winnie Kamau, said this would be one of the biggest swimming gala they've ever had, having attracted such a huge number of participants.
"I believe this championship would be one of the biggest events we've had. We have a large number of swimmers who have already confirmed their participation and we are hopeful it would be a success," said Kamau.
This will be a two-in-one event to include swimmers in the under-10 and over-26 years categories.
This will be the first event in the swimming calendar, after a two-month break. It comes against a backdrop of a sterling performance from the national team in an international swimming gala held last month in Manchester, England.
Kenya Swimming Federation treasurer, David Ngugi, who accompanied the six-member team, said that the swimmers did the country proud at the event.
Among the star performers was Achieng Ajulu-Bushell. The 14-year-old Ajulu swam 50m breaststroke in 32.22 in the FINA World Championships, which is the fastest in her age group this year.
