The 2008 Copa Coca-Cola secondary schools football championship kicks off this weekend in five regions countrywide. In addition to the cash prizes and sports equipment on offer from sponsors Coca-Cola, this year's tournament will pick six talented players who will attend the 2008 Coca-Cola International Football Camp at the Brazilian Football Academy.

Top Kenyan football personalities were named last week to sit on the selection panel that will identify the six stars from the tournament which kicks off this weekend in Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru, Kisii and Eldoret.

They include national team coach Jacob "Ghost" Mulee who also handles Kenyan Premier League Champions, Tusker FC.

Other members of the elite panel are Gabriel Njoroge, coach of the national Under-17 team and Premier League club, Mathare Youth, Harambee Stars assistant coach Twahir Muhiddin and Bob Oyugi.

Former Kenya internationals Mickey Weche and Henry Motego are the other members of the panel.

Saturday's matches will be played at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium (Mombasa region), Kisumu Polytechnic (Kisumu) and the Meru Teachers' College (Mt Kenya). On Sunday, action shifts to Kisii High School (Kisii) and Wareng School (Rift Valley).

Nairobi's matches will be held on Saturday, May 17 at Lenana School.

The organiser of the tournament in Wareng, Charles Okoth, said yesterday that 24 boys' and 16 girls' teams have been drawn.

Regional champions

Boys' defending champions, Uasin Gishu High School will open their title chase against the former national and regional champions St. Antony. The girls' champions, Kerotet High School, will tackle Nasokol Girls in their opening match.

In Kisii, 40 schools are expected at Kisii School for the third edition of the Copa tournament. Last year's boys' winners Itierio will begin their defence against Masaba's Nyankoba Mixed. The girls' cup holders, Mosisa, will open their title defense against Asumbi.

Omare cautioned the 40 schools that will participate in the tournament against fielding over age players.

"Participating schools should ensure that they present players who are under 15 years who are in form one and two," he said.

Winners will receive a trophy plus a Sh100,000 shopping voucher for sports equipment from Nairobi Sports House and certificates.
