George Nsimbe's all conquering Kampala City Council (KCC) FC yesterday closed in on their first National Super League trophy since 1997 when they dispatched title rivals Police FC 2-0 at Nakivubo Stadium.
An own goal from Police winger Jimmy Kulaba gave KCC a 1-0 half-time lead, before fast improving KCC striker Brian Omwony netted the second to make the points safe.
The win took KCC to 71 points from 33 games, six more than SC Villa who retain a mathematical chance of catching KCC.
Police stay second on the table with 66 points but cannot catch KCC with one game left.
KCC, who have now won eleven out of their last 12 games, got a perfect start when Kulaba hit an Anthony Bongole fourth minute corner into his own net with Police keeper Salim Sowedi already beaten.
Omwony sealed KCC's victory with a 52nd minute diving header, off a precise Vincent Kayizi cross.
The goal took his tally for the season to 14 goals, equaling long time lead scorer Bruno Olobo. Impact coach George 'Best' Nsimbe are now anxiously waiting for the result of today's game between Villa and Simba which starts at 10 a.m. at Namboole.
For Villa just to stay in the race, they need to score at least ten goals without reply against Simba and Police and hope that KCC loses it's final game to Bunnamwaya.
"The postponement of our game from yesterday to today is really a big advantage. We know we are still in the race and the game plan against Simba is thorough attacking," Villa coach Asuman Lubowa said yesterday. His side face an onerous task as KCC has both a six point advantage and superior goal difference.
