A Mudzi man allegedly committed suicide after poisoning his two children on Sunday.

Chikakani Chikuwe of Nyadare Village under Chief Chimukoko was pronounced dead on arrival at Kotwa Hospital while his children, Kudakwashe (4) and Panashe (8), were reportedly in a stable condition in the same hospital.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Godfrey Mubaiwa said Chikuwe had earlier on approached his wife Shupikai Chiwaza and told her that he had taken poison and had also poisoned their two children. "It is not clear why Chikuwe committed suicide and tried to take his children's lives because he did not give reasons," said Asst Insp Mubaiwa. He said after Chikuwe had taken the poison, he threw away the empty container of rogor and then ran for about 100 metres before collapsing on the ground and losing consciousness.

"A report was made at Nyamapanda police who attended the scene and took the three to Kotwa Hospital where Chikuwe was pronounced dead on arrival.
